Japan backs Moldova’s EU path and reaffirms its commitment to support it, even if an Asian country’s involvement may seem unusual at first glance.

“ We deeply respect the efforts of the government and the Moldovan people to become part of European society. We stand ready to offer as much support as possible in the coming years,” said Japan’s ambassador to Chișinău, Kazuyuki Takeuchi, in an interview with IPN.

The diplomat noted that during his four years in Chișinău, he has seen a “European spirit” in Moldova, highlighting the strong determination of Moldovan society to pursue the European path, which Japan considers the right one and supports.

Kazuyuki Takeuchi also stressed the need to preserve national identity.

“ Citizens should not forget their identity and the values that define Moldova. The European Union’s requirements are complex and demand significant effort, but it is important not to lose the essence of what Moldova is today,” the ambassador said.

Regarding relations between Moldova and Japan, the ambassador pointed to their advanced level of development, noting that they have evolved from isolated actions into a constant and multidimensional dialogue.

“ In 2025 alone, six high level Moldovan officials visited Japan and discussed various topics, including disaster management, crisis management, agriculture, and the business environment,” the ambassador said, expressing hope that Japan will also increase its visits to Moldova.

Bilateral relations extend beyond political and economic dimensions and increasingly include a cultural component, which is seen as essential for bringing societies closer together. In this context, the Japanese ambassador mentioned the Bunkasai festival, which helps strengthen people to people ties.

“ A relationship based on political dialogue, economic cooperation, and financial assistance now increasingly includes a human dimension. I believe this deepens the relationship between our two countries,” Kazuyuki Takeuchi said.

Regarding support for Moldova, the ambassador explained that Japan’s approach focuses on promoting peace and prosperity globally by supporting countries that pursue democratic development and integration into the international community.

“ Our belief is simple. Every country can benefit from peace and prosperity within a strong and healthy international community. I believe Moldova’s effort to integrate into the European system and the international community is a positive one,” he said.

Referring to the impact of projects implemented in Moldova, the diplomat noted that Japan has consistently supported key sectors, helping build a sustainable foundation for development.

Kazuyuki Takeuchi added that investments will continue to focus on basic human needs such as health, education, and social services, which support a healthy and stable society in the long term.
