Bad weather has also taken hold in Europe. Continent faces snowfall and extreme temperatures in the middle of spring

Winter has returned in the middle of spring. Snow and cold weather will dominate Europe for the next few days. A cyclone that has formed in the Mediterranean Sea basin and is moving towards south-eastern Europe, as well as a wave of polar air, called the polar vortex, is heading towards the European continent. A severe weather code red has been issued in several European countries.

Severe weather warnings have been issued in several European countries due to the "polar vortex", which has temporarily brought winter back into spring. Most affected are the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, as well as Poland, Germany, France and the UK. It also snowed like winter in Serbia, where gusts of wind knocked down trees and electricity pylons, knocking out power in several towns.

In Croatia and Montenegro, violent gusts stopped ferries along the Adriatic coast. Strong winds and temperatures more than ten degrees below normal for the period affected Croatia, Greece and Italy. Turkey also came under snow, and residents were taken by surprise by the sudden change in temperature.

The cold-air cyclone also hit Romania, where road traffic is snarled by ice.

"It's snowing. It's snowing heavily, it's been snowing continuously since four in the morning. Our snow ploughs are on the road. Unfortunately, traffic participants have not understood that they have to make way for the snow ploughs so that we can act."

Meteorologists in the neighbouring country have extended the Code Orange for heavy snow until tomorrow. In most of Moldova across the Prut and in the Carpathians, snow will continue to fall, sometimes heavy. Strong winds are also forecast in Romania until tomorrow.
