Ana Cerari, Roma voice who cannot read: “Education always came first in my family”
Many Roma adults have not completed secondary school, and one in five can be considered functionally or completely illiterate. They often need assistance with completing documents or applying for social assistance. In Soroca, a community mediator named Ana Cerari provides this support. As a Roma herself, Ana grew up in a family that prioritized education. Now, she helps those who did not have the opportunity to attend school.

In the city of Soroca, Roma individuals who have difficulty completing documents can always seek help from Ana Cerari.
"We are not very skilled in this area, and the mediators from the city hall assist us a lot. At the city hall, in social assistance, at the polyclinic, and even with writing, we rely on their help," says Raheli Codreanu.
"I don’t know how to read or write. I have two children, and I need assistance. It is very important for me to receive help in this situation," says Vasile Ferari.
Ana Cerari grew up in a Roma family where traditions and education were equally valued.
"Thanks to my father, I attended school and completed my secondary education. Now I understand the importance of education. When I was a child, I didn't want to go to school, but now I am very satisfied. All Roma children should be educated and at least have a secondary education or some form of schooling certificate," says Ana Cerari.
Local public administration employees emphasize the crucial role of community mediators in society.
"Every day, a significant number of Roma people come to us with various needs. Considering that many lack formal education, the Roma mediators greatly assist them in completing documents and guiding them on where to get help," explains social worker Adriana Sochirca.

Currently, 47 Roma community mediators are active in the Republic of Moldova.
