No passport stamps: EES system now active at all EU external borders

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a fully automated digital tool replacing passport stamping in most European countries. It became operational at the external borders of the European Union starting April 10.
The new system is set to be progressively implemented at land borders, airports, and seaports starting on October 12, 2025.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this system aims to modernize and streamline border control, enhance security in the Schengen area, and prevent illegal stays, all while preserving existing movement rights.
Specifically, the Entry/Exit System (EES) is designed to reduce waiting times at borders, quickly identify non-EU citizens who do not meet entry or stay conditions, or who have exceeded their permitted duration in the Schengen area. Additionally, it enhances security at Europe's borders and facilitates the use of automated border control systems for holders of biometric passports.
The Border Police previously explained, “The EES is a modern electronic system that records the date and place of entry and exit for third-country nationals admitted for short-term stays (maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period). The system collects alphanumeric and biometric data, including a facial image and four fingerprints, and it automatically calculates the duration of the authorized stay.”
We remind you that the EES will not change the current travel rights of citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
