Former MP Elena Gudumac convicted of illicit enrichment: 700,000 lei confiscated, 450,000 lei fine

Former MP Elena Gudumac was convicted of illicit enrichment and is required to pay a fine of 450,000 lei. The Chisinau Court in Buiucani issued the ruling, which also includes the confiscation of more than 700,000 lei for the benefit of the state.

According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, the seizure of former parliamentarian Elena Gudumac's assets has been upheld, and she will be barred from holding public office for the next ten years.

In this case, Gudumac was also found guilty of falsifying declarations. However, she will not face punishment for this offense, as the statute of limitations has expired.

Records from the case indicate that Gudumac, while serving as a deputy and afterwards, allegedly acquired assets through relatives that significantly surpassed her official income. These assets include a car valued at over 250,000 lei and an apartment in Chisinau worth over 700,000 lei. Additionally, Gudumac did not disclose this real estate in her asset declaration, leading to accusations of falsification.

Investigations by Rise revealed that when she made these acquisitions, Elena Gudumac was an unaffiliated Member of Parliament, having left the Communist Party faction a year earlier along with 13 colleagues.

In the same case, two close relatives of Gudumac, who were accused of complicity in illicit enrichment, were acquitted by the court. In one instance, the judges ruled that no criminal act occurred, and in another, they determined that the actions did not meet the necessary legal criteria for a crime.

The verdict is not final, as anti-corruption prosecutors have stated that they will decide within 15 days whether to appeal the court's ruling.

We remind you that after being unaffiliated for a time, Gudumac joined the Democratic Party faction in 2017, which was then led by oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc. Following the end of his mandate as a deputy in 2019, she continued her work at the Court of Auditors, where Marian Lupu was appointed president.
