Hungary election: Viktor Orbán faces existential challenge from former ally Péter Magyar

Nearly 8 million voters are deciding whether to extend Orbán’s 16-year rule or pivot toward the "Tisa" party. Analysts describe the vote as a de facto referendum on Orbán’s illiberal governance since 2010.

The geopolitical friction is palpable. In March, Hungary blocked a €90 billion EU loan package for Ukraine. This financial brinkmanship over the "Druzhba" pipeline remains a primary point of contention with European partners.
Polling stations will remain open until 19:00 local time. Early results are expected to emerge late Sunday night, signaling either a continuation of the Orbán era or a radical shift in Central European politics.
