Moldova will launch digital ID wallet for easier access to services
The Republic of Moldova is set to introduce a digital identity wallet that meets European Union standards. This new wallet will enable citizens to identify themselves remotely and access online public services more easily. This was announced by Nicoleta Colomeeț, the director of the Electronic Governance Agency, during the "Pe Față" show on Moldova 1.
The new system aims to transform the way personal data is utilized and provide citizens with greater control over their information, according to Colomeeț.
“The purpose of the European digital identity wallet is multifaceted. It addresses interoperability at the European level, allowing citizens to identify themselves and navigate more easily. Access to a digital identity must be recognized as a right and extended to all citizens,” Colomeeț explained.
The digital wallet will include identity documents and facilitate electronic document signing. One of its key advantages is the enhanced control it provides over personal data. Currently, information is often exchanged without the citizen’s direct involvement, with access verification occurring afterwards.
“At present, we see this information retroactively. We still sign data processing agreements on paper, but the digital wallet will change this process,” Nicoleta Colomeeț added.
With the new system, users will be empowered to give explicit consent for data sharing, access their usage history, and revoke permissions at any time.
"We are restoring control over data to citizens. They will be able to decide who has access, view the history of shared data, and revoke access directly through the application," emphasized the head of AGE.
This initiative is part of the effort to align with European Union requirements, which mandate that member states and candidate countries provide citizens with free access to a digital identity wallet by 2026. This will facilitate access to services and improve mobility within the European space.
