National Bank of Moldova issues silver coin commemorating victims of 1946-1947 Soviet-induced famine

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) has officially released a new silver commemorative coin titled "In memoriam: The 1946-1947 Famine in Bessarabia." The issue marks a solemn tribute to the victims of a tragedy orchestrated by the Soviet regime.
A legacy of remembrance
The coin joins the "Historical Events" series, highlighting a humanitarian catastrophe that claimed countless lives in post-war Moldova. Unlike natural disasters, this famine is recognized as a direct result of repressive authoritarian policies.
"It is our moral and historical duty not to forget this dark period," stated NBM Governor Anca Dragu. She emphasized that honoring these victims is a fundamental step in affirming Moldova's European identity, rooted in truth and dignity.
Technical and symbolic value
The commemorative coin is minted in silver with a nominal value of €2.55 (approx. 50 MDL). It has a limited mintage of 1,000 units, each accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the Governor.
The graphic design, authored by Andrei Popa, serves an educational purpose. It aims to integrate the collective memory of the 1946-1947 tragedy into the consciousness of future generations.
Institutional commitment to democracy
Governor Dragu noted that Moldova’s path toward the European Union is built on the respect for human life and the condemnation of past abuses. The NBM’s role, she added, is to ensure that citizen welfare is never again sacrificed for ideology.
The coins are available for purchase through the National Bank of Moldova and licensed commercial banks. These institutions may apply a maximum price margin of 3% over the official rate established by the NBM.
