Chisinau police corruption: Prosecutors seek 30-day arrest

Moldovan prosecutors have formally requested a 30-day pre-trial detention for six officers from Chisinau’s Botanica Police Division. The officers were detained following a major anti-corruption probe.
The Chisinau Court (Ciocana headquarters) is scheduled to examine the warrants this Friday, April 24. This follows over 30 coordinated raids conducted earlier this week by the National Anticorruption Center (CNA).
Systematic bribery and drug ties
Investigators claim the suspects systematically extorted bribes ranging from $3,000 to $10,000—approximately €2,800 to €9,300. These payments were allegedly made in both cash and cryptocurrency.
The funds originated from individuals involved in illegal drug trafficking. In exchange, the officers allegedly offered protection or helped suspects evade criminal prosecution.
Institutional response
Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin confirmed the arrests, which include a department head. She emphasized that the investigation remains a priority for ensuring police integrity.
Following the raids, the General Police Inspectorate (IGP) suspended the entire leadership of the Botanica Police Division. This move aims to ensure an objective investigation into the aggravated passive and active corruption charges.
