Moldova marks 1946 Soviet famine

The National Library of the Republic of Moldova has opened a new exhibition documenting the Soviet-organized famine of 1946-1947. The event commemorates the 80th anniversary of a tragedy that claimed approximately 200,000 lives.

Titled "In the Jaws of the Soviet-Organized Famine in Bessarabia," the showcase features over 60 historical items. Visitors can view monographs, photo albums, and original editions of the "Moldova Socialistă" newspaper from that era.
Documenting a historical tragedy
The exhibition highlights the harrowing realities faced by the population under Soviet rule. Archival materials detail the systematic confiscation of food reserves from civilian homes and the extreme suffering endured by children.
Records also document the summary executions of individuals seeking survival. Many were shot by authorities while attempting to flee across the Prut River into neighboring Romania in search of food.

Preserving the memory
Organizers emphasize that the volumes on display provide essential testimonies to help the public understand the past. Several definitive historical works are available for consultation, including "The Famine Book" by Larisa Turea and "An Unrecognized Genocide" by Mariana S. Țăranu.
The exhibition is open to the public until May 22, 2026. It is located on the second floor of the National Library's central building on 31 August 1989 Street in Chisinau.
