Hundreds of students showcased EU knowledge at EuroQuiz Moldova; 41 teams reach the final

Hundreds of students from across the country showcased their knowledge of the European Union (EU) history and culture in the semi-finals of the "EuroQuiz Moldova 2026" contest. On Friday, April 24, the names of the 41 teams that qualified for the finals were announced. The finals will take place on May 8 at the Palace of the Republic, where the teams will compete for the grand prize: an educational trip to Brussels.

Eight teams participated in the school stage for the Buiucani sector, with the students from "Ivan Neciui-Levițchi" Lyceum emerging as the winners. Their success was attributed to long hours of study, preparation, teamwork, and a range of emotions, as shared by team member Petru Bogdan.

"Honestly, we didn’t believe in our abilities. We worked for two weeks, learning a lot about all the countries in the European Union. While accumulating points, we kept checking our progress and realized that we made two or three mistakes in several rounds. In the end, we didn't believe in our success because our coordinator said we didn’t have a duel, which led us to think we had no chance. We are still shocked that we advanced to the republican stage. We are ready to compete in the final, but we know we still have to work hard," said Petru Bogdan during an interview on the show "Zi de Zi" on Radio Moldova.

When asked if young people today are sufficiently informed about the European Union, Bogdan responded, "Currently, we have a wealth of resources for information and qualified teachers who teach this subject in history lessons. In the 12th grade, we learned about the European Union."

The competition was intense, with participants striving for every point to secure their spot in the finals on May 8. The competing teams stated that they had given their best efforts to reach this decisive stage.

"Personally, I found the contest easier than last year. The questions covered various fields, providing greater diversity. I encountered different questions, some easier and some more challenging, like which European capitals are crossed by the Danube River," said Bogdan Marițoi from "Hyperion" Theoretical Lyceum in Durlești.

"I thought it was a wonderful experience. Overall, I learned many new things from this competition and would recommend any student passionate about history or the European Union to participate in the future. Young people are informed about the opportunities offered by the European Union, but you can never claim to know everything. Competitions like this provide a great chance to learn more. I am in the 11th grade and considering various faculties abroad, which is a valuable opportunity for everyone. Of course, there are also wonderful opportunities in our own country," said Ana, a student at "Spiru Haret" Lyceum in Chisinau.

Alexandru Melniciuc, a history teacher and mentor of the winning team, noted that this achievement resulted from the students' dedication and intense preparation.

"We were emotional, but we achieved a good result. I am particularly pleased that a lyceum with instruction in Russian won the EuroQuiz competition. This indicates that we, at the high school level and within our institution, promote not only European values but also human values more broadly. We aspire to connect with people and civilized countries. This is the message we brought by participating in this competition," said Alexandru Melniciuc.

Of the nearly 300 teams that reached the semifinals, 41 teams qualified for the grand finale, which will take place on May 8 in Chisinau.
