Transnistria may adopt Moldovan leu

Moldovan authorities are actively exploring the introduction of the official Moldovan leu (MDL) in the breakaway Transnistrian region. A dedicated working group, including experts from the National Bank of Moldova and the Ministry of Finance, is currently analyzing the transition. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri confirmed the initiative during a recent broadcast on Radio Moldova.
Minimal impact on citizens
The potential currency shift is not expected to cause significant economic disruptions for the local population. Chiveri noted that residents in major Transnistrian cities, such as Tiraspol and Rîbnița, already avoid storing their savings in the unrecognised, highly volatile local ruble.
"Considering the vulnerable state of the region's so-called currency, the impact on ordinary citizens will be minimal," Chiveri stated. Furthermore, the transition poses little risk to regional businesses, as most already operate legal bank accounts on the government-controlled right bank of the Nistru River.
Gradual economic alignment
Officials are currently evaluating multiple implementation scenarios. However, the government has withheld specific operational details while the policy remains under active debate and strategic review.
The proposed currency switch represents a critical milestone in Chisinau's broader strategy for gradual economic reintegration. By aligning the breakaway region with Moldova's official financial framework, authorities aim to permanently bridge the long-standing economic divide.
