EP backs 12% boost to EU funds for Moldova

The European Parliament approved a report on April 28 proposing a 12% increase in the "Global Europe" budget line. This boost targets the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) to support candidate states like Moldova.

Spearheaded by MEP Siegfried Mureșan, the initiative demands dedicated pre-accession funding lines within the upcoming EU budget. Mureșan stated this approach guarantees necessary predictability for candidate countries preparing for full European integration.

Financial predictability for reforms

Exact financial allocations for Moldova remain pending until broader negotiations on the total budget limits conclude. However, Mureșan noted the proposed 12% increase provides a strong baseline for securing adequate long-term funding.

He emphasized that pre-accession funds are crucial for driving modernization, drawing parallels to Romania's successful integration process. A reformed and prosperous Moldova directly serves the security and geopolitical interests of the entire European Union.

Next steps in EU budget negotiations

Following the April 28 vote, this report officially became the European Parliament's mandate. It will guide the upcoming trilateral negotiations with the European Commission and the European Council.

These institutions will now debate the final shape and volume of the 2028–2034 MFF. Securing these dedicated lines will dictate the pace of reforms in Eastern candidate states for the next decade.
