Moldova digitizes Dniester monitoring to boost water security

The Ministry of Environment will install 15 automated water flow monitoring stations along the Dniester River by November 2026. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder announced that these digital systems will replace outdated manual stations, providing authorities with real-time data on water levels and potential environmental risks.

Digital resilience and flood prevention

The upgrade aims to modernize Moldova’s hydrological infrastructure, ensuring immediate detection of flow fluctuations. Minister Hajder emphasized that real-time monitoring is critical for flood prevention and managing water surges entering the country from the north.

"We must have an automated system to verify the flow at any given moment," Hajder stated during a broadcast on Moldova 1. Data will be transmitted digitally and made accessible to the public via the State Hydrometeorological Service website, specifically at key entry points like Naslavcea and Unguri.

Strategic response to cross-border pollution

This modernization follows a severe pollution incident in March, sparked by a Russian strike on Ukraine’s Novodnestrovsk hydropower plant. The attack caused significant oil leaks into the Dniester, forcing Moldovan authorities to deploy absorbent booms and filters to protect the national water supply.

In response to such vulnerabilities, the Ministry is developing a network of regional strategic hubs in the north, center, and south of the country. These facilities will store emergency equipment, including specialized filters and barriers, to ensure a rapid, coordinated response to future contamination threats.

Current water quality status

While water quality testing has been scaled back from twice daily to twice weekly, officials confirm that indicators currently remain within safe parameters. The transition to automated sensors will eventually include water quality metrics, further reducing the country's reliance on manual sampling during environmental crises.
