Moldova fines car washes €51,000 for toxic waste leaks
Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder announced that authorities imposed fines totaling €51,000 (approx. 1,000,000 MDL) following a massive crackdown on car washes last month.
During March, inspectors audited 77 businesses across the country. The sweep revealed severe environmental violations, primarily involving the illegal disposal of industrial sludge and untreated wastewater.
Environmental Impact and Sanctions
The Ministry warned that businesses failing to rectify these violations face immediate operational suspension. A single car wash cycle can consume up to 300 liters of water.
Without specialized hydrocarbon separators, detergents and oil residues flow directly into the soil and groundwater. This mismanagement poses significant risks to public health and local ecosystems.
Legislative reforms ahead
Minister Hajder highlighted a current "sensory gap" in legislation that restricts the Environmental Protection Inspectorate from conducting spot inspections. Currently, the law requires prior notification for audits.
"We need instruments for rapid intervention," Hajder stated. "Environmental damage is often instantaneous. If we do not arrive within hours of a violation, the evidence disappears."
Nationwide monitoring program
The government is currently reviewing legal frameworks to balance business rights with ecological enforcement. This initiative follows a surge in citizen complaints regarding water contamination.
The nationwide inspection of all car wash facilities will continue through May. Officials aim to ensure every operator installs mandatory filtration systems to protect Moldova's water resources.
