Moldova prioritizes defense over expelling Russian envoy

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi announced that Moldova will prioritize long-term defense investments over impulsive diplomatic reprisals following the discovery of a Russian drone in the capital.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that expelling the Russian Federation's ambassador would not stop aerial incursions. He argued that the most effective response remains strengthening the nation’s air defense capabilities.

Strategic restraint and defense focus Popșoi stated that Chisinau must act "conscientiously" and proportionally. He warned against emotional decisions that could escalate the regional security situation, citing similar incidents in NATO members like Poland and Romania.

"The best reaction is investing in the defense sector," Popșoi told Realitatea. He noted that only advanced anti-air and anti-drone systems can guarantee the physical safety of citizens and their property.

While Moldova has summoned Ambassador Oleg Ozerov to deliver a formal protest, the government views such diplomatic moves as largely symbolic compared to operational readiness.

Recent drone incidents in the capital

The statement follows an incident last night when a drone landed on a residential rooftop in Chisinau’s Centru district. Police experts confirmed the device contained no explosives but are conducting a detailed analysis of its origin.

Since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, multiple drones have violated Moldovan airspace. Chisinau has repeatedly condemned these incursions as grave violations of state sovereignty.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains that while psychological measures have their place, only modern equipment—often requiring significant funding can provide a practical shield against future threats.
