Ex-officer faces trial for police station shooting

A former Moldovan police officer will stand trial for aggravated hooliganism after firing seven shots inside a Chișinău precinct. The incident occurred while the off-duty officer was intoxicated.
Prosecutors have forwarded the case to court following the December 19, 2025, incident. Around 4:00 AM, the man allegedly discharged his legally owned Makarov (PM) pistol at the Centru Police Inspectorate.
The gunfire shattered windows and damaged an exterior wall, severely disrupting the night shift and violating public order.
Defendant claims accidental discharge
The former officer pleaded not guilty to the charges. He stated that the shots were fired accidentally and uncontrollably.
If convicted, the former employee of the General Police Inspectorate (IGP) faces up to seven years in prison.
Political exposure and high-level dismissals
Member of Parliament Vasile Costiuc first exposed the case on December 22. The MP alleged the shooting followed a physical altercation after a National Police Day celebration held on December 18.
Following the incident, the accused officer was fired. The authorities also dismissed the head of the Centru Police Inspectorate, Lilian Luca, and his deputy, Sergiu Muruz.
The IGP later issued a statement denying that any physical conflict or brawl occurred between employees or civilians prior to the shooting.
