Outdoor May 1 celebrations: rescuers remind people of safety rules for picnics and outings

On May 1, many people choose to celebrate International Workers’ Day outside. To keep relaxation free of incidents, rescuers urge citizens to act cautiously and follow safety rules in recreation areas and during outdoor activities.

To prevent incidents, fires, and other risks, the General Inspectorate for Emergencies (IGSU) reminds us that grills, bonfires, and campfires should only be lit in specially designated areas.

Officials also recommend using metal grills and keeping fires under constant supervision. To avoid burns or accidental fires, people should not use flammable liquids to start flames.

IGSU warns against lighting fires near forests, dry vegetation, or combustible materials and prohibits throwing unextinguished matches or cigarette butts near forested and recreational areas. Adults should not allow children to play with fire, matches, charcoal, or wood.

Rescuers also stress that all fires must be fully extinguished before leaving to prevent wildfires, especially in forest zones.

People are advised to keep firefighting tools such as water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby for emergencies. When staying near water, rescuers recommend close supervision of minors and prohibit unsupervised swimming. Picnic waste should be collected and disposed of in designated areas to protect the environment and keep spaces clean. In case of danger, citizens can call the emergency number 112.

May 1 is marked in red on the calendar. Moldova, along with more than 80 countries, celebrates International Workers’ Day, a holiday rooted in history that honors workers’ struggle for social rights and fair working conditions.
