Maestro Gheorghe Mustea celebrated at 75 in Chisinau

The Republic Palace hosted a gala concert honoring the 75th anniversary of renowned composer, conductor, and academician Gheorghe Mustea. Organized by Teleradio-Moldova, the event gathered state officials, fellow artists, and admirers to celebrate a cornerstone of national culture.

Mustea, who has served as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Teleradio-Moldova since 1989, described the performance as more than a concert. He characterized the musical gathering as a "collective prayer" intended to offer spiritual light to the public.

Cultural impact

Soloist Tatiana Costiuc and pan-flutist Marin Gheras emphasized the universal appeal of Mustea’s compositions. They noted that his works, which blend folk traditions with contemporary symphonic rigor, have received acclaim in the United States, Germany, and Turkey.

Critics and attendees highlighted that Mustea’s historical operas, such as Alexandru Lăpușneanu and Ștefan cel Mare, effectively addressed a cultural vacuum in the Romanian-speaking space. His work is credited with providing a modern identity to regional symphonic music.

Academic excellence

Vlad Țurcanu, Director General of Teleradio-Moldova, praised Mustea for preserving the orchestra’s vitality through challenging decades. Ion Tighineanu, President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, noted Mustea's international standing as a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg.

Anniversary celebrations will continue on May 2 in Cahul, followed by a scientific symposium at the Academy of Sciences on May 12. Born on May 1, 1951, in Mândrești, the Maestro remains a pivotal figure in the European musical landscape.
