Sandu: Moldova must invest in defense amid drone risks
President Maia Sandu has reaffirmed Moldova's commitment to modernizing its national security infrastructure. Speaking during a strategic briefing on Saturday, the head of state addressed the increasing frequency of drone incursions and debris falling on national territory.
Strategic transparency in the digital age
Sandu emphasized that official communication must remain transparent to counter the rapid spread of misinformation on social media. She noted that while the public demands immediate answers, the priority remains technical verification.
When a drone is discovered, authorities first determine the presence of explosives before investigating its origin. Sandu has instructed the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) to issue a safety guide for citizens encountering such devices.
Addressing the reality of airspace violations
Official data reveals over 50 airspace violations and approximately 10 instances of drone debris falling within Moldova. The President criticized political actors who dismiss these threats, labeling such rhetoric as dangerous and irresponsible.
The Moldovan government is currently working with international partners to acquire interception technologies. By studying Ukraine’s frontline expertise, Moldova aims to detect and neutralize aerial threats before they cause casualties or infrastructure damage.
Countering propaganda with defense spending
Despite significant donations from external partners, Sandu insisted that Moldova must also allocate domestic budget funds for military modernization. She dismissed criticisms from Kremlin-aligned proxies regarding increased defense spending.
"If a drone strikes, nothing else matters," Sandu stated, comparing Moldova's modest needs to Russia's massive military budget expansion. She concluded that protecting citizens remains the administration's "priority zero," regardless of external political pressure.
