Nicușor Dan: EU will decide by late June on opening the first negotiation chapter with Moldova

A public response regarding the start of negotiations with the Republic of Moldova for its accession to the European Union is expected by the end of June. This announcement was made by Romania's President, Nicușor Dan, on May 4 during the European Political Community meeting held in Yerevan, Armenia.
According to Nicușor Dan, the topic was discussed by the political leaders present at the European Political Community meeting in Yerevan.
"I participated in the discussion about Moldova with several European leaders in a format that began a few years ago. The conversation primarily focused on Moldova's accession to the European Union. The conclusion was that we are waiting for Hungary's response regarding Ukraine's entry, which is somehow linked to Moldova's situation, and we expect an answer by the end of June," declared Nicușor Dan after the meeting, as reported by News.ro.
The President of Romania expressed hope for a positive response, "in terms of the official start of the procedures regarding the Republic of Moldova."
"Let's hope that the response will be favorable, indicating that Moldova will officially commence the process of joining the Union with the first cluster - Fundamental Values," the Romanian President added.
We remind you that the Republic of Moldova submitted its application for EU membership on March 3, 2022. In June of that same year, Moldova was designated as a candidate country, and by December 2023, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations.
Official negotiations began in June 2024, followed by a bilateral screening process. By the end of 2025, technical negotiations on the first clusters are expected to open.
The accession process for the Republic of Moldova to the European Union involves aligning its national legislation with 35 negotiation chapters. These chapters are organized into six thematic groups, known as clusters, which encompass the full spectrum of state functionality, including economy, justice, and environmental protection.
On March 17, the Republic of Moldova and the EU initiated technical negotiations for the final three groups of accession chapters: Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth, Green Agenda and Connectivity, and Resources, Agriculture, and Cohesion.
Currently, technical negotiations encompass all six groups and 33 chapters of the acquis communautaire.
