Students in the north of the country explore science through experiments with EU support

Students at the "Mihail Sadoveanu" Theoretical Lyceum in Ocnița are excited to come to school. Full of enthusiasm, they eagerly anticipate their chemistry and biology classes, where they conduct various experiments. The laboratories they work in resemble the ones they admired on TV as children. This engaging learning environment is made possible through a project funded by the European Union (EU).

We were tasked with measuring CO2 levels in the air and in leaves. In the air, we observed that the levels are generally stable, but they occasionally drop from 3,000 to 2,800. In the leaves, the CO2 concentration remains constant, with only a small, gradual drop.

At the lyceum in Ocnița, three science laboratories have been established where engaging science lessons take place. These rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and interactive technologies, transforming classes into dynamic learning experiences.

"I mean, we, as students, can conduct these experiments ourselves and see how they unfold. Above all, this greatly guides us in our career paths and helps us for the future. From my experience working in laboratories, I have gained clarity and moved closer to my dream of becoming a doctor," one student shared.

"These lessons truly inspire me to attend class, listen to my teacher, and engage with everything happening around me. In discussions with my peers, I realized that working in the laboratories sparked a strong desire to study chemistry and biology," another student said.

The courses have also become more engaging for the teachers. "This has motivated us to learn more and to elucidate theoretical phenomena that were previously difficult to explain. Students are very interested in this equipment. We use it not only in lessons but also strive to integrate it into projects," said Natalia Bairac, a Chemistry and Biology teacher.

Similar modernizations have occurred at the “Alexei Mateevici” Theoretical Lyceum in Dondușeni. "Well-equipped laboratories allow us to go beyond theoretical teachings and imagination. They enable us to experiment, apply knowledge, and understand scientific phenomena much more effectively."

In total, 42 science laboratories and mathematics classrooms have been renovated and equipped across 10 model schools in the Republic of Moldova, benefiting over 7,600 students.
