IMF sends a mission to Chișinău to discuss a new requested program

An IMF team of experts, led by Alina Iancu, will visit Moldova from May 7 to 20 for discussions with the authorities following a request for a new programme supported under the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI).

The purpose of the visit is to assess recent economic developments. IMF experts will update their risk assessment and discuss policy and reform priorities with the authorities and other relevant stakeholders, said Svetlana Cerović, the IMF resident representative in Moldova.

The PCI is a non-financing program instrument. It provides closer dialogue between the IMF and member countries and signals approval of policy frameworks, helping states attract funding from other sources.

The last IMF mission to Moldova took place from December 4 to 17, 2025.

Moldova missed an IMF disbursement of about $170 million (around 2.9 billion lei) in November last year. Finance Minister Andrian Gavrilița explained at the time that the final tranche was not released because no review missions took place during the year and the financing programme expired on October 19.

Of the total amount not received, over 1 billion lei was planned under the Extended Fund Facility and Extended Credit Facility, while 1.8 billion lei was allocated under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility.

The IMF noted that the missed disbursement resulted from delays in implementing fiscal and governance commitments.
