Former MP and his brother face up to 15 years in prison over wealth, vacations, and unjustified expenses

A former communist Member of Parliament, who later transitioned to democracy, found himself in court after prosecutors uncovered a discrepancy of nearly three million lei between his total wealth and his officially declared income. His brother is also implicated in the same case, accused of assisting in the concealment of assets obtained through illegal means.

A former parliamentarian is facing accusations of illicit enrichment, while his brother is charged with complicity in this crime.

The investigation began in January 2022, following findings from the National Integrity Authority. Prosecutors allege that during his tenure as a deputy from February 2014 to December 2021, the former parliamentarian and his family amassed wealth and incurred expenses that cannot be justified by their legal income.

Specifically, law enforcement officials claim there is a discrepancy of over 2.8 million lei between the reported income and the wealth acquired, which includes expenses for car insurance, medical and educational services, vacations, food deliveries, maintenance services, and bank loan installments.

The former deputy’s brother is accused of aiding in the acquisition and transfer of property rights to conceal assets as part of a scheme.

Both individuals deny the charges against them.

Under the law, such crimes can result in a fine of up to 500,000 lei, imprisonment for 7 to 15 years, and a prohibition on holding certain positions for 10 to 15 years.

Prosecutors have announced that they have seized real estate and financial assets valued at over seven million lei.
