Over 60 foreign delegations expected in Chisinau. Popșoi: Moldova will highlight progress over the past six months.

The main topics on the agenda for the ministerial session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CMCE), which will be held on May 14-15 in Chisinau, will include human rights, child protection, efforts to combat violence against women, regional security, and the fight against disinformation.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, who also serves as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the upcoming event hosted by the Republic of Moldova will mark the conclusion of our country's six-month mandate leading the institution. This meeting is expected to bring approximately 60 delegations to Chișinău, including Foreign Ministers and representatives from European institutions. It will serve as an opportunity to showcase the Republic of Moldova's progress in strengthening democracy, the rule of law, and public institutions.
During Moldova's six-month mandate at the helm of the Council of Europe, reforms within the Council of Europe have directly contributed to the European integration process and improved citizens' quality of life. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi mentioned these achievements in the "Zi de Zi" program on Radio Moldova, on May 8.
He highlighted the implementation of the Istanbul Convention, which has led to the establishment of mechanisms for the protection of victims of domestic violence and the reinforcement of responsible institutions.
Additionally, Popșoi emphasized that support for Ukraine and international mechanisms to sanction aggression will be a central focus of the upcoming meeting. He also mentioned Moldova's contributions to initiatives to create an international tribunal and to establish structures such as a registry of damages and compensation mechanisms.
"In total, nearly 60 delegations will participate in this significant event, including representatives from the Council of Europe and the OSCE Secretary General. We will organize parallel events and working groups on key topics currently on the Council of Europe's agenda, such as migration and combating disinformation—an extremely important issue. Our goal is to maximize the number of delegations present to highlight the progress made by the Republic of Moldova and to secure support, particularly from the member states of the European Union, given our plan to officially open negotiation chapters as soon as possible," declared Mihai Popșoi.
When discussing relations with the European Union, the official noted the growing support for the Republic of Moldova's security, facilitated by the European peace program. Following her visit to Chișinău, European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas announced a new assistance package of 120 million euros to enhance defense capabilities, after the European Union previously allocated approximately 200 million euros for similar purposes.
"Given the public debate regarding Russian drones and mechanisms for defending the Republic of Moldova and ensuring the security of our citizens, investing in defense is the best solution. All countries around the world are taking this approach. The Republic of Moldova must also invest in defense if we are to be taken seriously as a state concerned about national security and the safety of our citizens. The support from the European Union and the leadership demonstrated by Kaja Kallas in this regard is unequivocal, and we are immensely grateful to our partners in Brussels," stated the head of diplomacy of the Republic of Moldova.
The Republic of Moldova assumed the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on November 14, 2025, in Strasbourg. At the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe held in Chișinău on November 21, the authorities reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and emphasized the need to hold the Russian Federation accountable for its actions.
We remind you that, over the next six months, the rotating chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will be held by the Principality of Monaco.
