EU accession

Popșoi: Moldova is optimistic about soon opening EU accession negotiations

The Republic of Moldova is hopeful that it will soon begin political accession negotiations with the European Union (EU). Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi expressed this optimism during an interview on the "Zi de Zi" show on Radio Moldova. He emphasized the importance of making this optimism credible and taking advantage of the current "window of opportunity."

"Given the current window of opportunity, we will work to capitalize on it, especially since we deliver results here at home. This is evident in last year’s Enlargement Report and the recent Press Freedom Rating. The Republic of Moldova has achieved the highest status and the best rating for press freedom among countries in the region, including those that are candidates for accession," stated Mihai Popșoi.

The Republic of Moldova’s European path is "strongly" supported by EU member states and the European Parliament, which are "truly lobbying to help us reach our goal of being part of the greater European family, where there is peace and prosperity," Popșoi added.

"Our aspiration is to live in peace and tranquillity, to consolidate our sovereignty, and to improve our quality of life here at home in the Republic of Moldova," the minister said.

Hybrid threats, particularly those arising from the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, will persist and may increase in intensity. The use of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, complicates this challenge. However, the Republic of Moldova has demonstrated commendable resilience.

"These challenges united us as a society; we showed solidarity, empathy, and unity during the elections in 2024 and 2025. Our society remained cohesive and did not allow itself to be manipulated or bought. We effectively resisted attempts to undermine the Republic of Moldova and divert us from our European path," Popșoi said.

This lesson has been learned, and the Republic of Moldova will continue to invest in resilience. The Minister of Foreign Affairs stated, "The Republic of Moldova can take pride in the fact that, despite enormous efforts by the Russian Federation to divert us from our European path and sabotage our sovereignty, our citizens have remained steadfast", the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out.
