VIDEO | EU ambassadors said Moldova is building a future based on peace, freedom, and European values on Europe Day.

The path to the European Union (EU) requires sustained effort, deep reforms and a lot of determination. The ambassadors of the EU states to the Republic of Moldova promise, in the messages made public on Europe Day, to help our state advance on its European path, showing their conviction that "the place of the Republic of Moldova is in the EU" and that "a stronger Moldova means a stronger Europe".
António Costa: "Together, we will build a common European future"
"The future of the Republic of Moldova lies in Europe" and both the authorities in Brussels and Chisinau must put in "a lot of effort" to make this "a reality." This message was delivered to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova on May 9, Europe Day, by António Costa, President of the European Council.
The European official addressed Moldovans as "future members of the European Union" in a video posted on the EU Delegation to Chisinau's Facebook page.
"On Europe Day, we celebrate our shared European project— a moment when the founding members chose unity over division and cooperation over conflict. They decided to build a future of peace, freedom, and prosperity on the ruins of the Second World War. We believe that your future lies in the EU. Let us work hard to make this a reality," urged António Costa.
The elections in the Republic of Moldova, held in September 2025, represented "a clear vote in favor of EU accession," as recalled by the President of the European Council.
"We look forward to taking the next steps in the accession process as soon as possible. Together, we will build a common European future. Long live Europe!" concluded António Costa.
European path: Transformation and benefits for people
The European Union was established as a project of peace, and today the Republic of Moldova is shaping its future rooted in European values—a future characterized by peace, freedom, and dignity, as stated by Iwona Piórko, the European Union Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova.
The process of European integration is already yielding tangible benefits for the people of Moldova and represents a historic opportunity for the nation, the diplomat noted.
“The European path for the Republic of Moldova signifies transformation, but above all, it brings concrete benefits for citizens. It involves creating a safer, more prosperous, and dignified future for everyone. This transformation is for you, enabling access to new investments and better job opportunities right now. It promises modernized agriculture, improved living conditions for all, and equal access to justice, healthcare, education, and opportunities. Let us fully seize this historic opportunity,” Iwona Piórko urged.
The EU Ambassador also emphasized the accelerated pace of Moldova's European journey.
“It is an honor for me to celebrate Europe Day here for the first time as the EU Ambassador to your beautiful country. Moldova captivates with its landscapes, culture, traditions, and immense growth potential, as well as its extraordinary, talented, hardworking, and hospitable people. This is a historic moment for the Republic of Moldova—advancing on the path to EU accession with determination and at a rapid pace, marking a profound process of transformation,” highlighted the head of the EU diplomatic mission in Chisinau.
“Romania is and remains by the side of the Republic of Moldova with all determination”
On Europe Day, Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, the Romanian ambassador to Chisinau, reaffirmed Romania's strong support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova, emphasizing that integration into the EU is the only route to genuine freedom.
“For Romania, membership in the European Union has meant the consolidation of freedom, acceleration of development, and profound transformations that have led to real changes in people's lives. The European path for the Republic of Moldova is a natural and deeply legitimate choice—a path that reconnects you to the place to which you belong through history, culture, and values: the European Family,” the ambassador stated.
Cristian-Leon Țurcanu highlighted Romania's support in various sectors, including education, infrastructure, energy security, and emergency interventions.
“Romania is and remains by the side of the Republic of Moldova with unwavering determination, expertise, and support, ensuring that the benefits of European integration are felt in the lives of every citizen. Our solidarity is evident through actions such as renovated kindergartens providing improved learning conditions for children, scholarships for young people from the Republic of Moldova to study at universities in Romania, and projects that foster community development and strengthen trust in a shared European future,” he said.
The ambassador also encouraged the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to look to the future “with confidence”: “Romania stands by you, believing that your European path leads to hope, stability, and success. Together, we strive for freedom, dignity, and peace. Europe is me, Europe is you—long live Europe! Long live the special bond between us, which grows stronger every day.”
The Republic of Moldova will celebrate Europe Day with a large-scale program organised in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau. The inauguration of the “European Town” will take place at noon.
The event will gather the embassies of European Union member states, showcase EU-funded projects, and offer interactive activities for all ages, culminating in a concert dedicated to Europe Day.
The program will run from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., featuring performances by popular artists from the Republic of Moldova.
Europe Day is celebrated on May 9 to commemorate the Schuman Declaration, which led to the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) — the first in a series of European institutions that laid the groundwork for today’s European Union.
In 1950, Europe was still grappling with the aftermath of World War II, which had ended five years earlier. Countries were seeking ways to prevent future conflicts. They concluded that pooling coal and steel production would make war between France and Germany—historical rivals—“not only inconceivable but also materially impossible.”
The declaration made by French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950, became known as the “Schuman Declaration.” It called for the formation of a community where members would jointly manage these vital resources.
The ECSC was established by France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, which helped raise living standards and foster a more united Europe.
The Schuman Declaration states that “world peace cannot be secured without creative efforts proportionate to the dangers that threaten it” and that “Europe will not be built all at once or as a result of a single plan, but through concrete achievements that will first create a de facto solidarity.”
Europe Day was established in 1985 during a summit of European leaders in Milan, with May 9 chosen to commemorate the Schuman Declaration. The first official European-level celebration took place the following year, on May 9, 1986.
In the Republic of Moldova, Europe Day was celebrated on a large scale for the first time in Great National Assembly Square (PMAN) on May 9, 2016. This marked a shift from the previous years, when the event was celebrated more modestly. Subsequently, a legislative initiative was passed to officially recognize Europe Day alongside Victory Day against Fascism, a project voted on by Parliament in April 2017.
