European Town opened in Chișinău with over 20 ambassadors. Igor Grosu said: “The stage cannot hold all the friends Moldova has”

The European Town opened on May 9 in Chișinău, where hundreds gathered to celebrate Europe Day with Moldovan officials, EU diplomats, and representatives. More than 20 ambassadors joined Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu on stage as the ceremony began with the national anthems of Moldova and the EU.

"I have noticed that the stage is not big enough for how many friends the Republic of Moldova has", declared Igor Grosu, thanking the European diplomats for the support offered to the Republic of Moldova and for the fact that the country is "respected, valued and supported every day".

In his speech, the Speaker spoke about the significance of May 9, evoking the tragedies of World War II and the war in Ukraine.

"After that ordeal, European leaders understood that only through a peace project can Europe survive. Today, this project is called the European Union", stated Igor Grosu.

The future of the Republic of Moldova is in the European Union, reiterated the official from Chisinau.

*"Moldovans are Europeans and, in the shortest possible time, we will be Europeans with proper documents", said Igor Grosu.

In turn, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu stated that the Republic of Moldova's approach to the European Union is already reflected in the projects and investments made in the localities of the country.

"Europe means repaired roads in villages and cities, businesses that have been given the chance to grow, renovated schools, investments, jobs and opportunities for people. Above all, Europe means respect for man", said the Prime Minister.

The Republic of Moldova continues its European path to build "a strong, modern state capable of giving people confidence in tomorrow", said the Prime Minister.

"For us, Europe is not just a political direction, Europe has become part of our daily lives. Today, the Republic of Moldova is closer than ever to the European Union, and this is due to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, the people who have had tenacity and who have not given up believing in a European future. The future of the Republic of Moldova is European and is already being built here, together", the Prime Minister noted.

Europe “is not just a place on the map, but a choice” for peace, freedom and a better future, declared the European Union Ambassador to Chisinau, Iwona Piórko on stage at the PMAN. The diplomat noted that the European path of the Republic of Moldova is subject to external pressures and challenges, but emphasized that the country has demonstrated resilience.

“Here, in Moldova, the choice is made by you. You have chosen democracy instead of fear. You have chosen reform instead of stagnation. You have chosen hope instead of uncertainty. This is not always the easiest path. Real change is never easy, it requires effort, determination and progress, which come step by step, sometimes slower than we would like. And we know that Moldova’s path has not only been difficult, but also tested,” stated the head of the EU diplomatic mission in Chisinau.

At the same time, the ambassador emphasized that European support for the Republic of Moldova "is not just in words, but in actions, every day", and European integration means investments, jobs, better schools, energy security and a functional justice system.

We remind you that President Maia Sandu is expected to deliver a speech on the stage of the European Town on the evening of May 9, accompanied by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, who will arrive in Chisinau in the afternoon.

Under the theme “Europe Is YOU!”, the European Village opened in central Chișinău to mark the 20th anniversary of Europe Day in the Republic of Moldova and the 76th anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration.

Visitors can explore the traditions of more than 20 European Union member states in the Great National Assembly Square through an avenue dedicated to the continent’s culture and cuisine.

Europe Day will conclude with a concert in the centre of Chișinău.
