Chisinau hosts public flashmob against drug use

A mobilization took place in the center of the capital to address a growing issue that is negatively impacting the lives of many young people. Approximately 4,000 students participated in a flashmob titled "Life Matters! Say NO to Drugs!" The event was part of a municipal anti-drug initiative and aimed to respond to the rising consumption of illegal substances among minors.

Students from various educational institutions in the city danced and displayed banners with awareness messages. They believe that unity is the only way to combat this issue.

"It's an important message for teenagers our age regarding harmful substances, and we hope it reaches everyone, as these substances are not good for our health," said Ionela Ghimpu, a student at the "Mihail Berezovschi" Theoretical Lyceum.

"Let's demonstrate to the world that choosing drugs is not the right decision and spread awareness about their consequences," added Bogdan Bădănău, a student at the "Academia Copiilor" Lyceum.

The teachers accompanying the students expressed concern that traffickers exploit children's vulnerability by distributing drugs near schools.

"We are here with the children to support the idea that there should be no drugs sold. Let's eliminate the word 'drugs' from the Republic of Moldova. Drug addiction and other related issues lead to serious problems in families," said Ivan Moroz, a teacher at the "Ivan Neciui - Levițchi" Lyceum.

Present at the event, mayor Ion Ceban emphasized that the fight against drugs should become a community priority.

"Drugs destroy lives; some do so more slowly, while others do so more quickly. Using drugs is not cool at all," declared the mayor of the capital.

Official statistics are concerning, with approximately 50,000 registered drug users in the country. Last year alone, over 900 people were held criminally or contraveningly accountable for the consumption and trafficking of prohibited substances.
