Specialists are continuing to search for six more people who may be missing under the rubble. The cause of the explosion has not been definitively established. Investigators are looking into the possibility of a gas leak.

Fire officials said the search for the missing will take a long time, given the particular difficulties of the work.

A third building partially collapsed and people were evacuated from nearly 30 buildings in the area.

French President Emmanuel Macron sent a message of sympathy to the people of Marseille.
