Renovated sports hall at the Republican Sports Lyceum will host international competitions

The Republican Sports Lyceum in Chisinau has undergone significant renovations, thanks to an investment of approximately 10 million lei from the Ministry of Education and Research. The newly refurbished multi-purpose hall will serve as a training facility for 11 different sports disciplines and will play a key role in supporting the national teams of the Republic of Moldova. This facility will host training sessions, competitions, camps, and both national and international sporting events.

The modernization process involved a complete overhaul of the electrical, thermal, water, and sewage systems, as well as ventilation and interior finishing works. A new sports floor was installed, along with updates to the locker rooms, sanitary facilities, and auxiliary spaces.

Additionally, the technical areas were rehabilitated to ensure modern and safe training conditions, including for women's boxing and judo, as well as for hosting sports competitions.

"We want the students of the Republican Sports Lyceum to enjoy facilities comparable to those in modern institutions across Europe. This multipurpose hall is a significant step in that direction. Through the Model Schools Program and with the support of external partners, we will continue to modernize the institution to establish an educational and sports campus that meets European standards," stated Dan Perciun, the Minister of Education and Research, during the inauguration of the multipurpose hall. He was joined by representatives from the National Olympic and Sports Committee, sports federations, coaches, and students.

Currently, the Lyceum has approximately 500 students. Among the institution's most famous graduates are Nicolae Juravschi, a double Olympic champion in canoeing; Igor Dobrovolschi, an Olympic champion in football; Anastasia Nichita, an Olympic vice-champion in women's wrestling; Denis Vieru, a bronze medalist at the Olympic Games; and Ghenadie Tulbea, a double European champion in freestyle wrestling.

The institution was included in the Model Schools Program, which benefits from the support of the World Bank and the Council of Europe Development Bank for the extensive modernization of the educational and sports campus.

Through the "Improving the Quality of Education" (EQIP) project, implemented by the MEC with the support of the World Bank, over 5.48 million lei were allocated for design services and the development of the concept for the modernization of the institution.

The total value of the planned investments for the renovation of the three lyceum blocks and the development of the adjacent field amounts to approximately 69 million lei. The project also provides for the modernization of the institution's stadium, including the development of a multifunctional sports field, running tracks, stands and dedicated locker rooms.

In parallel, with the support of the Central European Bank, an additional investment of approximately 40 million lei is planned for the construction of a new multifunctional sports complex intended for sports activities and post-exercise recovery. The complex will include halls for athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, and strength training, swimming pools, spaces for kayaking and canoeing, as well as accommodation and training areas.
