Pension rights extended to Moldovans residing in Slovakia

Moldovans who are working legally in Slovakia will be eligible to receive pensions once they reach retirement age. They will also have access to various social benefits during their employment, including compensation for work-related accidents, occupational diseases, and survivors' pensions. An agreement on social security between Moldova and Slovakia was signed in Bratislava in March 2026 and has been approved by the Chisinau Executive.
"Our citizens will be able to benefit from the recognition of work periods and contributions made in both countries, particularly regarding pension rights and other social benefits," emphasized Minister of Labor and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru during the meeting on May 20.
According to the official, this agreement provides greater security for the approximately 1,700 Moldovans living and working in Slovakia, ensuring that their contribution periods will not be lost, regardless of the country in which they worked.
"This agreement brings us closer to European standards in social security systems and demonstrates our commitment to protecting the rights of Moldovan citizens living abroad," added Natalia Plugaru.
The document outlines the provision of old-age pensions, disability pensions due to general conditions, allowances, pensions for work-related accidents or occupational diseases, and survivor's pensions, which include widow's or widower's pensions, orphan's pensions, and the so-called 13th pension.
Slovak citizens working legally in the Republic of Moldova will also benefit from the same social rights.
Currently, the Republic of Moldova has signed 22 social security agreements, of which 18 are in effect. In recent years, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection has significantly expanded this number by concluding agreements with countries such as Italy, Greece, Spain, Latvia, France, Switzerland, Canada, and Ukraine.
