Children with disabilities will receive 3,000 lei in June

Families raising children with disabilities will receive a one-time allowance of 3,000 lei each June. This legislative initiative was approved by Parliament with the support of the parliamentary majority.

The author of the project, Ludmila Adamciuc, a deputy from the "Action and Solidarity Party" (PAS) , mentioned during a meeting on May 21 that this initiative provides direct support to approximately 13,500 children and their families.

"I understand that this initiative has prompted both legitimate and less legitimate questions in the public sphere: Why only for these children? Why not for all? Why now? and many others. Every parent knows the challenges and costs associated with raising a child. The state does not ignore or downplay these difficulties. However, as a democratic and responsible society, we must learn to differentiate between equality and equity," declared the parliamentarian.

Ludmila Adamciuc emphasized the "huge expenses" that families incur when raising a child with a disability, which include costs for therapies, special equipment, treatments, and strict diets. In many cases, a parent must dedicate themselves entirely to caring for their child, resulting in the family relying on a single income as expenses continue to rise.

"We are fully aware that this one-time payment will not resolve the underlying issues or eliminate the daily challenges that these parents face. It serves more as a gesture of recognition from the state, especially since this project is part of a broader strategy to reform support services that we are developing in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection," the parliamentarian stated.

Marina Morozova, the Deputy Chair of the Committee on Social Protection, Health, and Family, emphasized that the authorities recognize that this allowance is insufficient. However, it can provide "an additional therapy, a medication, or a pathway to rehabilitation."

"If we can offer support to children who are facing greater challenges on Children's Day, then we have a moral obligation to do so", she added.

Morozova also mentioned that the government has launched several initiatives in recent years to support children and families in the Republic of Moldova. She highlighted the increase in the single birth allowance, which will rise to 21,886 lei as of January 1, 2026. Additionally, there is a new monthly allowance of 1,000 lei for all children up to 2 years old, along with the renovation of numerous kindergartens and the establishment of new nursery groups, providing parents the opportunity to return to work sooner to support their families.

The total estimated budget for this one-time financial support of 3,000 lei is 40.3 million lei, with funding identified in the state budget. After the project is reviewed in its second reading, the provisions will take effect on June 1, 2026.
