Dan Perciun announces social housing plan for young teachers

The government is considering creating social housing for young teachers in rural districts. This initiative aims to address the shortage of teaching staff and encourage new graduates to accept teaching positions outside major cities. The announcement was made by Dan Perciun, the Minister of Education and Research.

According to the minister, the authorities are exploring the possibility of piloting a project in the Ungheni district that would provide novice teachers with both employment allowances and temporary housing.

"Today, an important constraint is that if you are not from the respective district and do not have a home, it is unlikely that you will agree to relocate. If the state were to solve not only the issue of employment allowances but also the problem of providing decent housing for a period of time, we might be able to attract more people to consider options beyond Chisinau and their native districts, thereby looking at other opportunities throughout the Republic of Moldova," Dan Perciun stated during a program on Jurnal TV.

The Republic of Moldova is not necessarily facing a general shortage of teachers, but rather an uneven distribution of teachers across different areas, according to Dan Perciun. He noted that while some schools in Chisinau have overworked teachers, teachers in rural areas work only part-time due to small student numbers.

Data from the Ministry of Education indicate that there are currently about 1,300 vacant teaching positions, reflecting a decrease from previous years.

We remind you that the authorities have increased the allowances for young teachers who accept assignments at schools. Starting this year, these allowances can reach up to 375,000 lei for graduates who choose to teach in high-demand subjects, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, or computer science, outside the municipality of Chisinau.
