New festival in Chișinău celebrates the work of Grigore Vieru

The 18th edition of the "Grigore Vieru" International Poetry Festival began on Thursday in Chisinau. This festival is one of the most significant literary events in Romania, celebrating poetry and the cultural heritage associated with the work of Grigore Vieru. It honors the creations and personality of this celebrated poet, who has become a symbol of cultural identity and national values.

Inspired by Grigore Vieru's poetry, students captivated the audience with their performance titled "Home."

"His work represents life, beauty, and an abundance of love," confessed one participant.

The first edition of the festival took place in October 2009, just a few months after the poet's passing.

"Look, we have reached the 18th edition, thanks to the support of cultured and good people. (...) In this edition, we present a complete set of books," emphasized the festival organizer, the poet's son, Călin Vieru.

Poet Daniel Corbu, who organized the event in Iași, referred to the festival as "the most visible bridge over the Prut," dedicated to "the poet, the tribune, and the beloved teacher, both in the Republic of Moldova and Romania."

"My congratulations today go to all those who contribute to preserving the memory and promoting the work of this great Romanian poet," said Monica Babuc, the director of the Romanian Cultural Institute "Mihai Eminescu."

The Writers' Union of Moldova partnered with this edition of the festival, which brings together writers, librarians, students, and teachers to celebrate poetry, particularly Grigore Vieru's, as highlighted by vice president Ivan Pilchin.

The festival continued at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova with a scientific symposium, followed by an awards gala hosted at the Teatru Fara Nume.

"Grigore Vieru did not just write poetry; he wrote identity, successfully transforming the Romanian language, even in challenging contexts, into a home for the soul. The festival is a heartfelt affirmation that poetry unites spirits, and Vieru's works stand as the most authentic testament to this," emphasized Diana Vrabie, the winner of the literary criticism award.

The 18th edition of the "Grigore Vieru" festival continues on Friday in Ungheni and will be held in Iași this fall. The event is organized by the "Grigore Vieru" Cultural-Scientific Center in Chișinău and the "FeedBack" Cultural Association in Iași, in partnership with key institutions from the Republic of Moldova and Romania.
