Moldova–Italy ties go beyond diaspora

The Republic of Moldova and Italy share a strong relationship that is rooted not in government offices but in the connection between their people. Moldovans who came to Italy in the 2000s with hopes of a better future are no longer just part of the diaspora. They have become an integral part of life in Italy: they establish businesses, contribute to local communities, and, importantly, help promote the Republic of Moldova's image through their daily efforts.

The message was sent by Oleg Nica, the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Italy, at the request of Radio Moldova, in the context of the 80th anniversary of the referendum that transformed Italy into a republic.

"Rome is celebrating today, with the Italian tricolor visible everywhere, from the Colosseum to the planes performing acrobatic air shows, leaving trails of smoke in the colors of the tricolor. On this occasion, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to all Italian citizens listening to us from the Republic of Moldova and say: Viva l'Italia!" the ambassador expressed during the show "Zi de Zi".

A window of opportunity in 2028

The diplomat reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova's respect for the Italian people and all authorities of the Italian Republic, expressing gratitude for "their sincere friendship and the significant support they have offered to our country."

Italy, as one of the founding states of the European Union, strongly supports the Republic of Moldova's integration into the European community. Italian officials emphasize that this initiative is more than just an expansion of the European Union; it represents "the completion of the historic process of the reunification of Europe."

"In 2028, Italy will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union. The objective set by the country's leadership is to ensure that by this year, under Italy's presidency, we will be fully prepared on all negotiation chapters and sign the accession treaty," Oleg Nica emphasized.

Moldovans: Appreciated for their patience and work

Regarding Moldovans in Italy, the ambassador pointed out that while the migration flow in the 2000s primarily entered the labor market in elderly care services—where Moldovans are valued for their patience and quality of work—over time, the diaspora "has matured."

More and more compatriots have completed their studies and launched businesses, becoming integral parts of the communities in which they reside and contributing to their development.

"Currently, we have over 9,000 economic activities initiated by Moldovans in Italy," the diplomat noted, adding that the Moldovan diaspora serves as "a true economic and cultural bridge between our countries."

Record speed in promoting the pension agreement

The successful social agreement between Moldova and Italy demonstrates their close relationship, as it allows citizens of both countries to benefit from pensions and other social benefits.

All technical and administrative procedures have been finalized, enabling Moldovans who have worked legally in Italy to contact the National Social Insurance House to open their pension files, combining contribution periods from both nations.

"In Italy’s history, no other agreement has been signed and ratified by both chambers of the Italian Parliament as quickly as this one. Canada has signed such a social security agreement only with the Republic of Moldova and Albania among non-EU states. To provide some perspective, negotiations for a social security agreement with Japan initiated in the 1970s are still ongoing," the ambassador said.

Trade approaching the one billion threshold

Oleg Nica also highlighted the growth of bilateral economic relations, noting that trade has surged from $450 million to $900 million over the last decade, with forecasts indicating we may soon approach the $1 billion threshold.

"Our plums, walnuts, and especially our cherries—let me say, the tastiest cherries in the Republic of Moldova—are highly appreciated. The cherry trees that produce them come from Italy," Oleg Nica said.

Since his appointment as ambassador on July 30, 2024, Nica says he has gained a deeper appreciation for the beauty, quality, and most importantly, "the strength of an economy built by its people."

The Italian flag projected in Chisinau

The Day of the Italian Republic is celebrated on June 2, commemorating the 1946 referendum in which Italians voted to renounce the monarchy and establish a republic. A military parade traditionally takes place in Rome, accompanied by concerts, exhibitions, and official ceremonies in various cities.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Italian Republic were established on February 21, 1992. In a symbolic gesture of appreciation and friendship towards the Italian people, the National Museum of History of Moldova in Chisinau will be illuminated in the colors of the Italian flag: green, white, and red.
