A high-level Moldovan parliamentary delegation converged on Brussels from June 1–3 to accelerate European Union accession talks and strengthen inter-institutional cooperation.

European Parliament Vice-Presidents Nicu Ștefănuță and Victor Negrescu, alongside MEPs Siegfried Mureșan and Maria Grapini, reaffirmed that a majority of the European Parliament strongly backs Moldova's EU integration.

High-level political commitments

The meetings followed the recent signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the two legislative bodies, aimed at deepening democratic support and bilateral relations.

Parliament Vice-Speaker Doina Gherman emphasized the critical need to sustain the current momentum of internal transformations.

„Our country has made significant progress in recent years. Now it is up to us to maintain the pace of reforms and capitalize on this opportunity. Romania’s experience shows that opening negotiations means more than just a political decision. It brings greater confidence, investment, and economic growth. The citizens of the Republic of Moldova must feel the direct benefits of the progress our country has made,” said Doina Gherman.

Technical progress and opposition dialogue

The Chair of the parliamentary committee for European integration, Marcel Spatari, highlighted that the accession framework operates simultaneously on both political and technical tracks.

„The accession process is both technical and political. On the technical side, we have excellent teams in the chapter-specific working groups (we have already heard testimony in Parliament on 29 of the 33 negotiation chapters), and we have experts assisting the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Parliament. And at the political level, we have a favorable national and European context, which in European parlance is called a “window of opportunity.” A window through which a brighter and more secure future for the Republic of Moldova can be seen,” noted Marcel Spatari.

In contrast, Vice-Speaker and socialist opposition MP Vlad Batrîncea stated that EU integration must strictly align with domestic national interests and encompass inclusive institutional dialogue.

“The opposition represents a significant portion of the country’s citizens, and our voice must be heard and taken into account in all processes and projects that concern the future of the Republic of Moldova. Reforms can only succeed if they are built on broad consultations, dialogue, and respect for the national interest,” emphasized Vlad Batrîncea.

The multi-party delegation sent to Brussels comprised both Vice-Speakers of the Moldovan Parliament, Gherman and Batrîncea, alongside the leadership of all 12 permanent parliamentary committees.
