Court confirms Tauber’s prison term as prosecutors push for harsher sentence

Former MP Marina Tauber hwas sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison for her role in the illegal financing of the former "Șor" Party. During the hearing on June 5, the Criminal Panel of the Court of Appeal rejected appeals from both the prosecutors and Tauber’s lawyers, upholding the original sentence without any changes.

After the verdict was announced, lawyer Sergiu Moraru stated that the decision was predictable and criticized the courts for not considering the arguments and violations raised by the defense.

"I realized that no one wants to examine the evidence and address the violations I pointed out during the trial. These issues were neither analyzed nor interpreted by the court. The goal seemed to be to quickly pronounce and uphold a conviction", Moraru said.

He mentioned that the defense plans to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Justice and, if necessary, to the European Court of Human Rights.

"We will file an appeal to the Supreme Court. However, the final step is not the Supreme Court, but the European Court of Human Rights. The issue is that reviewing such cases can take years, and any outcomes may lose their significance for society," the lawyer added.

When asked about Marina Tauber's whereabouts, Moraru said that although he is in contact with her, he does not know her current location.

"She could be in the Russian Federation or anywhere else. I really don’t know. If you were to ask me, I would not advise her to return to the country as long as we do not have a fair justice system," the lawyer stated.

On the other hand, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office argues that the sentence given is too lenient considering the severity of the alleged offences. Prosecutors have requested an increased sentence of 13 years in prison.

Marina Tauber was sentenced on September 30, 2025, to seven years and six months in a semi-closed prison. This case pertains to the illegal financing of the former "Sor" Party, which was declared unconstitutional in June 2023.

The court also ordered the confiscation of over 206 million lei for the benefit of the state. Additionally, the former deputy was banned from holding public office and from engaging in any activities related to accounting and financial organization within political parties for a period of five years.

Currently, Marina Tauber is not in the Republic of Moldova, as she is on the wanted list. The sentence will begin once she is detained.
