Comrat deputies refuse to back interim president’s resignation

The discussion of Nicolai Ormanji's resignation as interim president of the People's Assembly sparked disagreements among the deputies from Comrat during the meeting on June 10. Some deputies left the room during the debates, leading to an interruption of the meeting when it became impossible to maintain a quorum.

The People's Assembly was scheduled to address Ormanji's resignation; however, the inclusion of this topic in the agenda sparked controversy. Vice President Gheorghe Leiciu insisted that the issue must be debated to "avoid legal blockages in the institution's activities."

"There is a request for resignation, and we are obligated to act accordingly. Who will be the president? Who will sign the documents? I will not sign any documents without a decision from the People's Assembly—this is impossible," Leiciu stated, as reported by Radio Moldova Comrat.

Only a handful of deputies supported the resignation, while the majority gradually left the room, leading to the meeting's interruption.

According to regulations, once the resignation is approved, the deputies have 20 days to elect a new president of the People's Assembly.

Nicolai Ormanji announced his resignation as interim president of the People's Assembly on Tuesday, June 2. He made this statement during a briefing that followed the unsuccessful attempt to convene a new session of the Comrat legislature. Local deputies were unable to approve the compromise document for holding elections in the People's Assembly due to a lack of quorum.
