CMC member steps down to protect party’s reputation

Councilor Sergiu Crețu has resigned from his local election mandate in Chișinău. This decision was confirmed by both Crețu and Zinaida Popa, the president of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which he was a member of. His resignation follows his exclusion from PAS, which was attributed to "incompatibility with the party's values."
"It is the party's decision, which we respect. The reason, as the party has mentioned, is an incompatibility with its values. After a councilor resigns, the next candidate on the list from the 2023 local elections will take their place," Zinaida Popa told Teleradio-Moldova.
At the end of May, the Party Action and Solidarity (PAS) announced the exclusion of Sergiu Crețu from the party and the withdrawal of political support.
When contacted by Teleradio-Moldova, Sergiu Crețu declined to comment on the reasons for his exclusion from PAS, stating that he does not want to harm the party's image and that he is stepping back from public life.
"I cannot comment in any way. Later, when things are clearer, I will respond," he said.
When asked if he would challenge the party's decision, he stated that he does not have a clear position on the matter: "I do not know. I cannot tell you that either."
Sergiu Crețu was a member of PAS for nearly 10 years.
"I was and remain an honest person. I have stepped back and am at peace. I came from the business world and will continue in that field. For now, I am withdrawing from public life and have resigned my mandate as a councilor. I do not wish to harm the party's image," Sergiu Crețu also declared.
PAS holds 20 mandates in the Chișinău Municipal Council. Following Sergiu Crețu's withdrawal, his position will be filled by the alternate candidate from the party's list in the 2023 elections, meaning the mandate will go to Vasile Melnic.
