Moldovans killed in Hungary accident; Maia Sandu expresses condolences

Two vehicles with Moldovan license plates were involved in two tragic accidents on the M1 highway near the city of Győr, Hungary, on the morning of June 12. Eight foreigners lost their lives in the two successive accidents, according to reports from 24.hu.

Tünde Mogyorósi, spokesperson for the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Police Inspectorate, stated in response to a publication that both the truck, which caught fire after colliding with a work machine, and the minibus involved in the accident had Moldovan license plates. All eight fatalities were men.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., a truck crashed into a work machine at kilometer 114 of the M1 motorway near Győr. Following the collision, the vehicle caught fire, resulting in the driver's death at the scene.

Shortly thereafter, around 5:10 a.m., a minibus collided with a truck that was parked due to traffic restrictions imposed after the initial accident. There were nine people in the minibus: seven died on the spot, and two others sustained injuries.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar extended his condolences to the families of the eight foreign citizens who lost their lives in the accident, as reported by the website 24.hu.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau confirmed that a road accident involving a minibus registered in the Republic of Moldova occurred in Hungary on Friday morning. The Ministry noted that the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Budapest is in constant contact with the relevant Hungarian authorities. According to the Ministry, "at this stage, the identity and citizenship of the victims have not been confirmed, and the Hungarian authorities are continuing the necessary investigations to determine all the circumstances of the accident and identify those involved."

"I learned with great sadness about the accident that occurred today in Hungary, in which a minibus registered in the Republic of Moldova was involved, resulting in seven fatalities and two serious injuries. My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy," wrote President Maia Sandu on her Facebook page.

The head of state expressed her condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Maia Sandu emphasized that "the responsible institutions in our country are in constant contact with the Hungarian authorities and are doing everything possible to provide the necessary assistance."
