Igor Grosu, after the sentencing of Șor to 15 years in prison: "Justice is done!"

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu welcomes the decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeal to send fugitive MP Ilan Șor behind bars and order the confiscation of his assets for the benefit of the state. The most important task now falls to the authorities, he says, who must make "every effort" to bring Șor to Moldova.

"Justice is being done, with difficulty, but even sinners come to be taken into account by the justice system in the Republic of Moldova. It is possible, therefore, especially when you delay and procrastinate for years, in the end, if you have common sense and resonate with what people expect, justice can be done (...) The globe for bandits and thieves is getting smaller and smaller. (...) Now the authorities will have to make every effort to make sure that these wandering bandits come home, stay where they belong," said Igor Grosu at the start of today's plenary session.

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal sentenced fugitive politician Ilan Șor to 15 years' imprisonment in the bank fraud case. The head of the anti-corruption prosecutor's office, Veronica Dragalin, says the high court's decision is enforceable and Ilan Șor should be transferred to prison. According to Dragalin, assets belonging to Șor worth one billion lei have been seized in the Republic of Moldova. The confiscated assets will be transferred to the state budget.

Fugitive MP Ilan Șor described the Court of Appeal's decision as illegal, taken under pressure and in violation of all legal provisions. Ilan Șor is convinced that the court's decision will be overturned the day after the change of PAS government. Moreover, Șor's lawyers have already stated that they will not only appeal the Court of Appeal's decision to the SCJ, but will also appeal to the ECtHR.
