Moldova will be represented by one student at three international Olympiads

A significant milestone for Moldova's education system. Alin Popescu, a graduate of a private lyceum, is the first student to represent the country at three different international Olympiads this summer.
This year marks a significant achievement for the Republic of Moldova, as it is the first time that a student has participated in three major international Olympiads in the same year. This remarkable feat highlights the high level of preparation of Alin Popescu, a 12th-grade graduate from the "Orizont" Theoretical Lyceum in Durlești and showcases his impressive results in mathematics and computer science over recent years.
Alin will represent Moldova in the following prestigious competitions:
- International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) – Shanghai, China, from July 10 to 20, 2026;
- International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) – Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from August 9 to 16, 2026;
- International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) – Astana, Kazakhstan, from August 2 to 8, 2026.
Alin has participated in international mathematics and computer science Olympiads for several years, achieving noteworthy success. This year, he is gearing up for a new challenge—the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence.
Although he does not adhere to a fixed training program, Alin practices consistently, both independently and with his teachers' support.
“Preparation for the Olympiad, as always, consists primarily of solving problems and tackling as many as possible,” he shared with Teleradio-Moldova.
Alin Popescu is most excited about the upcoming Artificial Intelligence Olympiad, in which he has not yet participated.
"I have taken part in the mathematics and computer science Olympiads in previous years and have won medals. I am confident that I can achieve great results this time as well," he expressed, hoping to earn a medal at the Artificial Intelligence Olympiad.
Representing the Republic of Moldova at such significant competitions is a considerable responsibility for him, but he prefers to concentrate on his own performance. "I am proud to represent my country," the young man told Teleradio-Moldova.
After graduating from the lyceum, Alin plans to continue his studies at École Polytechnique, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in France, where he will study mathematics and computer science.
To fellow students who are passionate about learning, Alin advises persistence and practice. "First and foremost, I would encourage them to believe in themselves because anything is possible. Determination and perseverance are what truly matter," he said.
Mathematics teacher Marcel Tiliucă, who is preparing Alin for international competitions, notes that one of Alin's unique qualities is his ability to excel in both mathematics and computer science. "He performs exceptionally well in both subjects, which makes him stand out," the teacher stated.
Preparation for competitions does not begin shortly before the event; rather, it is a continuous process.
"You can’t prepare just for an international Olympiad," the teacher noted.
Marcel Tiliucă is confident in his student's achievements, especially in mathematics. He highlighted that the young man has already won at least three medals at international Olympiads, along with strong performances in other competitions.
"He serves as an example for other children who can find inspiration in his accomplishments. The important thing for them to understand is that if you work hard, you will achieve results," the teacher added.
