Ukraine drone firms pitch Tokyo to counter China threat

The chief executive of Ukrainian military drone manufacturer UFORCE made an unpublicized visit to Tokyo in April. The executive presented formal defense proposals to Japanese officials and domestic defense contractors.
The meetings represent a broader push by Ukrainian drone manufacturers to tap into surging military spending across Asia. US allies in the region are actively seeking to counter China's growing military assertiveness near Taiwan.
Geopolitical technology transfer
Ukraine is leveraging its extensive combat expertise. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Kyiv remains ready to open its maritime drone technologies to Japanese partners.
Former Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera welcomed the strategic cooperation. He noted that Tokyo requires capabilities that demonstrate practical battlefield efficacy.
The Japanese military has already conducted at least one undisclosed demonstration of Ukrainian drone software developed by tech firm Swarmer.
Industrial defense scaling
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has warned that Tokyo could be drawn into a Taiwan Strait conflict. In response, her administration accelerated a historic defense buildup initiated in 2022.
Tokyo allocated €1.85 billion specifically for drone systems in its current defense budget. The government aims to boost domestic production to 80,000 units annually by 2030, up from just 1,000 in 2024.
However, Japan’s manufacturing targets remain dwarfed by Ukraine's domestic objective. Kyiv aims to construct seven million drones this year alone.
Gateway to Asian markets
Several Ukrainian defense firms are actively seeking Japanese industrial partners to co-produce military hardware for the wider Asian market. These include surveillance drone manufacturer Skyeton and kamikaze drone specialist General Cherry.
General Cherry co-founder Stanislav Grishin stated during his Tokyo visit that Japan represents the optimal gateway to Asian security markets.
The long-range capabilities of Skyeton systems could directly assist Japan in patrolling its territory of over 14,000 islands.
