Hungary removes Ukraine fast-track clause affecting Moldova's EU path
The Republic of Moldova remains structurally anchored to Ukraine on its path to European Union integration. While Budapest's latest diplomatic intervention failed to derail the broader enlargement framework, it effectively postponed critical discussions regarding an accelerated accession timeline.

The text modification, requested by Hungary during the European Council summit in Brussels, caused a collateral impact on Chisinau. This occurred because multiple member states insisted that the diplomatic language applied to both Ukraine and Moldova must remain strictly identical. Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed the development, explaining that the removal of the fast-track phrasing from the final conclusions was a logical consequence of keeping the two nations packaged together.
Progress on fundamental clusters
Despite the political gridlock over the acceleration wording, the European Council formally welcomed the launch of substantive negotiations with the Republic of Moldova. Specifically, leaders highlighted the opening of the first core group of chapters, known as the fundamentals cluster. European officials noted that subsequent thematic blocks will open progressively, depending entirely on merit-based reforms.
"The opening of accession negotiations for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova this week represents a historic step and a clear signal of the European Union's commitment to enlargement," stated European Council President António Costa.
Extended sanctions and strategic alignment
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the summit's operational achievements, emphasizing the goal to open multiple negotiation clusters before the summer recess. Additionally, EU leaders agreed to extend economic sanctions against the Russian Federation for a 12-month period, a significant shift from the previous six-month renewal cycle.
The regional landscape retains an additional layer of complexity. France and Germany continue to advance an informal initiative regarding the phased integration of the Republic of Moldova, which could eventually align its trajectory with the Western Balkans political package. However, Chisinau's immediate focus shifts to the upcoming EU-Moldova Summit, scheduled to take place in three days to further solidify the bilateral roadmap.
