EU-Moldova Summit in Brussels: reform progress to be assessed

President Maia Sandu will attend the second European Union (EU) - Republic of Moldova summit in Brussels on June 22. During this event, she will have meetings with António Costa, the President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission.
According to the European Council, the upcoming summit presents a crucial opportunity to emphasize the strategic significance of the Republic of Moldova's future within the EU and to enhance the partnership between the EU and Moldova.
During the summit, a new research framework agreement will be signed with the Republic of Moldova. This agreement aims to foster cooperation in various research areas related to smart specialization strategies and innovation policies.
Leaders at the summit are expected to evaluate the Republic of Moldova's progress in implementing reforms on its European path. This includes a focus on strengthening the rule of law, upholding fundamental rights, and combating organized crime.
The summit is taking place at a historic moment for both the EU and the Republic of Moldova, particularly following the opening of the first thematic group of accession negotiations, as noted by António Costa.
“The Republic of Moldova has made substantial progress and demonstrated a strong commitment to aligning with the EU acquis, despite facing unprecedented external pressure. The EU is committed to rapidly advancing the accession process of the Republic of Moldova, based on ongoing reform progress and a merit-based approach,” reads a statement from the European Council.
To support the Republic of Moldova’s reforms and its integration into the EU, the EU is making up to €1.9 billion available through the new Growth Plan for the period 2025-2027.
EU leaders will reaffirm their strong commitment to the sovereignty, security, and resilience of the Republic of Moldova, particularly in light of Russia’s ongoing hybrid attacks against Moldova and the repercussions of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
The leaders will also discuss sectoral cooperation, including Moldova's efforts to enhance its energy security, diversify its energy supply, and improve energy efficiency.
At the conclusion of the summit, the leaders are expected to issue a joint statement.
This meeting follows the official opening of Moldova’s accession negotiations on the first group of chapters, “Fundamental Values,” on June 15.
