Roma students and young people will benefit from special admission measures to schools, colleges, centers of excellence, and universities, starting with the 2026–2027 academic year.
According to the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), 10% of available places for Roma children and students will be reserved for admission to grades 1 and 10. Additionally, students who have passed the national middle school graduation exams will be able to access lyceum through special mechanisms provided by the ministry.
This announcement was made by the MEC during a meeting that included representatives from education authorities, Roma organizations, community mediators, and development partners.
The measures developed aim to facilitate access to education for Roma children and young people while reducing school dropout rates and absenteeism.
"The special admission measures for Roma children and youth aim to eliminate barriers that limit access to education and ensure equal opportunities for every child. We want as many Roma students as possible to continue their studies after graduating from gymnasium and benefit from the opportunities offered by the educational system," said Ivan Duminica, Head of the Political Service for Interethnic Relations, in a press release issued by the MEC.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Education and Research announced the launch of a new edition of the Merit Scholarship Program for Roma students. Beneficiaries of the program will receive a monthly scholarship of 1,200 lei.
