Alert: 35°C heatwave — IGSU urges caution

Citizens are advised to exercise heightened caution and, whenever possible, to avoid travel and outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. This recommendation comes from the General Inspectorate for Emergencies (IGSU) due to the Yellow Heat Code issued for Monday, June 22, across the Republic of Moldova.

According to forecasts from the Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring Authority, maximum air temperatures are expected to range from 33°C to 35°C. The IGSU (General Inspectorate for Emergencies) advises the public to follow protective measures against the heat wave and pay special attention to vulnerable groups.

The most at-risk individuals include the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic or cardiovascular diseases. Authorities recommend staying well hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, wearing light-coloured clothing, and using protection against ultraviolet radiation.

IGSU also highlights the dangers of being in enclosed spaces, emphasizing that minors should never be left unattended in parked cars or poorly ventilated rooms, as temperatures in these environments can quickly become hazardous.

For those choosing to relax near water, it is advised to swim only in designated areas and to keep a close watch on children. Jumping into water after prolonged sun exposure can lead to heat stroke, so it’s essential to cool the body gradually. Additionally, alcohol consumption should be avoided before and during swimming.

With the combination of high temperatures and dry vegetation, authorities are also warning of an increased risk of fires. The public is urged to refrain from using open flames near agricultural lands, forests, and areas with dry vegetation. In case of an emergency, citizens should call 112.
