Major supermarket operator plans takeover of Merci chain

The Competition Council is reviewing an economic concentration operation involving one of the largest food retail operators in the Republic of Moldova. This operator, which owns the Linella, Fidesco, Cip Market, Bravo, and Slavena Megamarket chains, aims to acquire control of the Merci store chain.
The transaction involves the acquisition of 100% of the company that operates the Merci stores. This acquisition will result in the complete integration of the Merci chain into the buyer's portfolio.
According to the competition authority, both parties are active in the market for the purchase and retail sale of consumer goods, primarily food, through their own store networks.
The Competition Council will analyze whether the proposed transaction aligns with the competitive environment, in accordance with the Competition Law and the regulations regarding economic concentrations.
Additionally, the Council invites third-party economic agents to provide their feedback on the potential impact of the transaction on competition. Observations can be submitted via email or by mail to the Competition Council's headquarters in Chisinau.
