Farmers protest again; drivers urged to use alternate routes
The police are warning drivers to avoid traveling towards the Leușeni and Sculeni border crossings on Thursday, June 25, due to farmers' intentions to continue protests and block these roads.
The recommendation for drivers is to use alternative routes to avoid delays and save time.
"We remind the organizers of the protests that the Police respect the constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and express themselves. However, the exercise of these rights must be conducted within the law and must not infringe upon the rights of others," states a press release from the General Inspectorate of Police.
The institution warns that unjustified road or border crossing blockades violate legal regulations and can significantly disrupt public order, safety, and the schedules of citizens with planned activities.
"We urge protest organizers and participants to act responsibly, avoid any actions that could disrupt road traffic, and ensure the peaceful and lawful conduct of their demonstrations," the Police message emphasizes.
During the protests held on June 24, the Police recorded two incidents. Access to the Cahul–Oancea border crossing was blocked for about an hour, temporarily affecting traffic.
In the Ungheni district, a protest participant driving his personal vehicle blocked a traffic lane and insulted police officers present at the scene.
“In both cases, charges were filed for intentionally blocking traffic and for insulting or resisting a public official during the performance of their duties,” the IGP reports.
Farmers are protesting against the government's intention to eliminate the reduced 8% Value Added Tax rate in agriculture, which will be replaced by the standard 20% rate starting next year.
Additionally, the demonstrators are requesting additional support measures for the agricultural sector, including direct per-hectare subsidies for cereal and oilseed crops, as well as reimbursement of 2026 diesel excise duties.
